trnwr office news story 03.26.10 trinity river national wildlife refuge has received funding for CONSTRUCTION of a new administrative office buidling to be located on the refuge itself. the facility will be built on refuge land on fm 1011, directly across from the sam houston regional library and research center. refuge manager stuart marcus said he is excited that after 16 years, they will soon have permanent space to call home, taking the place of their current small office in the 1300 block of north main street in liberty "audio" stuart marcus said preliminary drawings are for a 2,700 square feet facility. "audio" if additional funds become available, a 1500-square-foot STORAGE building would be added adjacent to the office building. the long-time trinity river national wildlife refuge manager said placing offices on refuge land is a trend that has been taking place for years. "audio" now, after years of seeking funding, stuart marcus said money has been allocated for the construction of refuge office space. "audio" according to the refuge manager stuart marcus, the friends of the trinity river refuge hope this is the first step toward eventually getting a visitor’s center, too. KUYKENDALL SENTENCE NEWS STORY 03.26.10 A 47-YEAR-OLD HULL MAN HAS BEEN SENTENCED TO 35 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER BEING CONVICTED OF POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE. Ronald Lee Kuykendall was CONVICTED BY a Liberty County jury in the 75th District Court of Judge C.T. "Rusty" Hight. ACCORDING TO COURT TESTIMONY, BACK ON AUGUST 7, 2007, Liberty County Sheriff’s Corporal Joel Davila and Deputy Eddie Gampher CONDUCTED a welfare check on a vehicle located on the side of State Highway 146 between Liberty and Hardin. The defendant, Ronald Lee Kuykendall, was sitting in the vehicle DRESSED in underwear and a tank-top t-shirt. WHEN asked for his driver’s license and proof of insurance, Kuykendall produced an expired identification card and a pizza coupon. TESTIMONY REVEALED The officers viewed an open container of beer AND beer iced down in a box in the passenger side floorboard of the vehicle. THE DEFENDANT TOLD Officers he was an undercover Texas Ranger and a peace officer for the State of Texas. DURING QUESTIONING, Corporal Davila SPOTTED an illegal knife LYING ON the driver’s side floorboard. Kuykendall was then arrested for Impersonating a Peace Officer and Possession of an Illegal Knife. During an inventory of the vehicle, THE MAN’s pants were located. A bag of marihuana as well as a bag of methamphetamine were found in THOSE pants. FURTHER 75TH DISTRICT COURT TESTIMONY revealed that the quantity of methamphetamine weighed 3.6 grams. AFTER HEARING TESTIMONY, THE JURY RETURNED A UNANIMOUS VERDICT OF guilty FOR Possession of a Controlled Substance, Methamphetamine, in an Amount of One Gram or More But Less Than Four Grams. THE CONVICTED FELON elected for judge HIGHT to assess his punishment. DURING THAT phase OF THE TRIAL, PROSECUTORS SHOWED Kuykendall WAS previousLY convicted and sent to prison for four felony DWI’s and one Burglary of a Building. After considering THAT criminal history, 75TH DISTRICT COURT Judge C.T. "rUSTY" Hight sentenced 47-YEAR-OLD Ronald Lee Kuykendall OF HULL to 35 years in prison for POSSESSION OF methamphetamine. The State of Texas was represented at trial by Assistant District Attorney Joe Warren. District Attorney Mike Little SAID JUDGE Hight’s sentencing of this habitual criminal SHOULD SERVE AS a message tO repeat offenders that they will be dealt with STERNLY if they continue to ply their illegal trade in Liberty County.
