something new at this year’s liberty JUBILEE is the royal white tigers discovery program. this traveling hands-on, interactive exhibit is part of zoo DYNAMICS’ educational outreach program. marcus cook, animal care supervisor with that dallas zoo, said the exhibit combines education with entertainment.

this special exhibit is set up on the sam houston plaza next to first liberty national bank. marcus cook said it includes a mating pair of royal white tigers.

the first white tiger camber to the united states in 1961 and was presented to president eisenhower at the white house. that tiger, a gift fro india, went to the NATIONAL zoo. currently, there are about 40 of these magnificient animals on the large accredited zoos in the united states, and it is believed there are around 400 in captivity in the world. again, the royal white tigers are

Despite aN OBVIOUS national recession and high unemployment figures, liberty county tax assessor/collector mark mcclelland said area property owners this year have paid their taxes in a similar fashion to historical trends.

mark mcclelland’s office collects property taxes for all local taxing entities except the dayton, devers and tarkington school districts. back in november 2009, The liberty county tax officer sent out property tax statements totaling $59.842 million for all the other taxing entities. that is a minute STATISTICAL increase from the 2008 billing of $59.795 million. as of the end of february, mr. mcclelland’s office had collected 88.2 percent of taxes owed to liberty county. COLLECTIONS totaled 94.1 percent for the city of dayton and 90.1 percent for the city of liberty. for those who haven’t paid their property taxes yet, mark mcclelland said interest is now being added to the balance. he encourages THOSE WHO ARE LATE TO AT least begin making PARTIAL payments to avoid EVEN more costly penalties.

a reminder - fm 1960 between dayton and huffman will be closed today AT THE RAILROAD TRACKS while crews work on the crossing west of dayton. cory taylor, txdot Area Engineer for Liberty and Chambers Counties, said the roadway is expected to be closed AT THE TRACK today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. while crews re-plank the railroad crossing and improve the transition from the road surface over the tracks. those traveling west from dayton toward humble should detour by taking highway 90 to crosby. then head north on fm 2100 to REJOIN with fm 1960 in huffman. txdot is also planning similar work next week at the railroad crossings located on fm 686 and on fm 1008 IN KENEFICK. area engineer cory taylor said detours will also be in place in those areas. repeating, fm 1960 will be closed at the railroad crossing west of dayton today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. while crews make IMPROVEMENTS.

senior citizens living in the dayton school district who want to learn how to use computers to access the internet and e-mail take note – dayton independent school district’s technology department is offering classes in april just for you. district officials say the computer course – POPULAR IN THE PAST - is designed for beginning computer users, and no prior experience with computers is necessary. the one-hour sessions will be held twice a week for three consecutive weeks, and any senior citizen who is a disd purple card holder may register. senior citizens within the district can get their free purple card at the disd administration building. these senior citizen computer classes will be offered from 3 to 4 p.m. tuesdays and thursdays from april 6 through april 22 at dayton high school ONLY for residents of disd. to register or learn more, call connie at the disd administration building at 936-258-2667.

THE LIBERTY LADY PANTHERS TRACK TEAM PLACED SECOND THURSDAY AT THE GID CAMPBELL RELAYS IN ANAHUAC. TAKING TOP HONORS IN INDIVIDUAL EVENTS WAS HAILI BEAM WHO took GOLD IN BOTH THE 1600 AND 3200 METER RUNS. ALSO EARNING A FIRST PLACE MEDAL WAS LADY PANTHER MEREDITH TAYLOR IN THE DISCUSS THROW. LIBERTY’S LAUREN COOK CLEARED 5 FEET 4 INCHES IN THE HIGH JUMP TO TAKE THE TOP SPOT WHILE WALLENCIA (wal-in-sia) GRANT FINISHED FIRST IN THE 200 METERS. ALSO CLAIMING GOLD WAS THE 4X200 LADY PANTHER RELAY TEAM OF ABINA (uh-bean-uh) KELLEY, DEZMINIQUE EDWARDS, JAILYN SEMIEN AND SHAFAA (shuh-fah) GUILLORY. OTHER LIBERTY GIRLS EARNING INDIVIDUAL PLACEMENTS WERE SHAFAA GUILLORY, ABRIEL ELLIS, ALISA BALDWIN, JAILYN SEMIEN, KIRBY TAYLOR, KIRBIE GRUVER, AMBER ELLIS, AND ALICIA BALDWIN. AFTER A STRONG SECOND PLACE FINISH AT THE GID CAMPBELL RELAYS IN ANAHUAC, THE LIBERTY LADY PANTHERS WILL NEXT COMPETE AT THE EAST CHAMBERS RELAY next THURSDAY.

republican candidate for liberty county judge, craig mcnair, has received the endorsement of his former opponent, jay knight, in the g.op. run-off ELECTION for that countywide post. craig mcnair is facing steve STEPHENS in the april 13 republican run-off. jay knight announced he was supporting craig mcnair friday afternoon AT the vara faye daniel PAVILION at liberty city hall.

REPRESENTATIVE kevin brady is planning several stops throughout his congressional district #8 next week to discuss the new NATIONAL health care law. that includes a visit to cleveland on tuesday from 8 to 9 a.m. in the city hall council chambers, 907 east houston street in CLEVELAND. congressman brady has been a focal OPPONENT of what he calls a GOVERNMENT takeover of health care. now, he will meet with those in his 8th CONGRESSIONAL district to discuss the new law. he will be in liberty county tuesday from 8 to 9 a.m. at cleveland city hall.
