DAYTON MOTOR BANK REMOVED

THE OLD DAYTON STATE BANK DRIVE THROUGH MOT0R BANK IN DAYTNO HAS BEEN DEMOLISHED AND REMOVED. ABOUT THE TIME THAT PROSPERITY ACQUIRED THE DOWNTOWN BANK THE MOTOR BANK WAS SOLD OFF. THAT PART IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE MAIN BUILDING AND ACTUALLY SEPARATED BY STERLING STREET. WELL KNOWN LOCAL BUSINESSMEN BILL AND MARK SJOLANDER PURCHASED THE PROPERTY WHICH IS BIGGER THAN SOME THINK. LAST WEEK AFTER THE FREE STANDING STRUCTURE WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED BY TWO HURRICANES THE SJOLANDER’S DECIDED THE SAFEST THING TO DO WAS TO CLEAR AWAY THE TWO STORY MOTOR BANK.. MANY MEMORIES WERE RESURRECTED DURING THE DEMOLITION. UPSTAIRS OVER THE DRIVE THRU WAS A COMMUNITY MEETING ROOM THAT WAS THE SCENE OF HUNDREDS OF GATHERINGS OVER THE DECADES. PLANS FOR SOME OF DAYTON’S GREATEST ACTIVITIES WERE COMPLETED IN THAT SPECIAL ROOM. IT WAS AN IMPORTANT PART OF DAYTON’S HISTORY. ANOTHER MEMORY WAS AN ARMED BANK ROBBERY THAT HAPPENED THERE ONE MORNING SOME 20 YEARS AGO WHEN THE DRIVE THROUGH BANK CLERK WAS HELD UP AT GUN POINT BY A WOMAN. THROUGHOUT HISTORY LIBERTY COUNTY HAS VERY FEW BANK ROBBERIES AND THE OLD DAYTON STATE MOTOR BANK HOLD-UP IS ONE OF THE VERY RARE UNSOLVED BANK ROBBERIES IN COUNTY HISTORY. AS OF LAS T WEEK THAT FAMILIAR STRUCTURE HAS BEEN LEVELED AND CLEARED AWAY. MARK SJOLANDER SAID THERE ARE NO IMMEDIATE PLANS FOR THE SITE HE AND HIS DAD, BILL, REMOVED IT BECAUSE OF THE BEATING IT TOOK FROM HURRICANES RITA AND IKE. MARK SJOLANDER TOLD US THEY HAVE NO PLANS TO SELL THE SITE BUT WOULD CONSIDER AN OFFER. THE NOW CLEARED AWAY OLD MOTOR BANK LOCATION IN DAYTON IS LARGER THAN MOST KNOW. IT RUNS FROM STERLING STREET TO BRYAN STREET WHICH CROSSES THE PARKING LOT AND THEN AS DEEP AS FROM MAIN STREET TO THE ADJACENT VINEYARD BUILDING.
